As-Salam; The Perfection and Giver of Peace
Allah is the One who grants peace and security to all His creations. He is above and beyond all weaknesses and is the source of peace and security for humanity. Breaking away from As-Salam brings disturbance and destruction to oneself. It is because He is free of any defect that the one who is with Him experiences peace.
When Muslims meet, they always greet each other by saying "Assalam Alaikum". It means that we are sending peace to the person we are meeting. In return, the answer to this greeting is "Walaikum Assalam", which also means to send peace to the reciter. As-Salam refers to the attribute of Allah as the source of this peace. The word Islam also encompasses the concept of peace which is one of the core principles of the religion. This name also implies the idea of being flawless, free from faults. Allah is complete and whole. Nothing depletes Him as He is self-sufficient. It is because of this nature of Allah that causes the person with him feels safe and secure.
The name As-Salam is mentioned in the Holy Quran, in the following verse;
"Allah is He, than Whom there is no other god;- the Sovereign, the Holy One, the Source of Peace (and Perfection), the Guardian of Faith, the Preserver of Safety, the Exalted in Might, the Irresistible, the Supreme: Glory to Allah! (High is He) above the partners they attribute to Him."
We can benefit from knowing As-Salam by working daily to attain peace. This process involves freeing the heart and mind from silly games with no benefit, like jealousy, envy, and revenge. Many people believe that revenge is a way to gain peace, but this is not the right way to achieve peace. Learn to be forgiving of yourself and others. Focus your effort to try and become as close to flawless as you can get. Work to minimize all your imperfections. When people can love themselves and love others, they will naturally bring peace to the earth.
According to some sources, the Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
"The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the people are safe, and the believer is the one from whom the people's lives and wealth are safe."
As-Salam is a Jamali name, and its benefit is that the sick will regain his/her health if this is recited to him/her 160 times. It also keeps the frequent reciter, of this name, safe from all types of calamities.
That's all for this blog! As always, I hope you learned something new. Share this with others so that they also learn about peace.
Have a great Ramadan ahead. Take care of yourselves.
F, signing off.
